Confrontation With God

They will be called oaks of righteousness, a planting of the Lord for the display of His splendor. – Isaiah 61:3b

“God, is this the way You treat someone who is faithful to You?” I yelled out loud on the top of the wooded hill where no one but God could hear me. “I have waited and waited and now this! I hate You, God! I have had enough!” Those were my words that day as I wrestled with news of an event that devastated me to the point where I broke down weeping.

As I sat there among the trees deciding what else I could say to God, I was speechless. I was angry. I was confused. I wondered if He even existed. If He did, I felt like He really didn’t honor my faith and obedience. I sat for hours wrestling internally with my feelings.

Finally, without answers and sensing that God wasn’t answering me, I turned to leave. I had been sitting on an old oak tree that was broken at the base. The tree pointed toward the base of another huge oak tree. Finally, a still quiet voice inside said, “Today, like this broken oak tree you are sitting on, you are a broken man. But this brokenness was needed in order for you to become this large oak tree you see.”

Months and even years had passed with many struggles. But God was true to His word from that day. He began to replace the pain and disappointment with an inner joy that only His grace could provide.

Have you ever wrestled with the events of life, feeling that God has deserted you? Have you been honest with God? He is the kind of Father who is willing to have those difficult conversations. He won’t always change things, but His purposes will be accomplished and peace will come if you trust. Trust Him this day with those things that are most difficult.

Prayer

I prayed that I will get a job that I think I will enjoy.

X2 prayed with me.

God answered our prayers and the job was offered to me.

But I was hesitant because this job requires me to work during the weekends. My family and church life will be affected.

So I prayed about it again. You did too.

God answered our prayers and I was given the option to work only on Saturdays. The education institute said I can have my Sundays off.

But I was hesitant again because I wish to spend time with Jo and Lawrence on Saturdays.

I prayed about it again. So did you.

God answered our prayers and I was told that eventually my job will only require me to work on Mondays to Fridays.

I am really amazed by how God answered our prayers. One at a time. When I prayed for what seem more impossible (from work on weekends to one weekend to no work on weekends), God showed me how mighty He is. How possible He can be.

Faced with all the doors that God had opened for me, I learnt three things:

1. God gives me the freedom to choose (that is within His plan).

2. God wants me to be happy with whatever I do (that is within His plan).

3. I am much more appreciative with the flexibility that God has given me in this present job.

God does more than what we can see when He answers our prayers.

Setting my gaze…

Psalm 16:8-9

“I have set the Lord always before me. Because he is at my right hand, I shall not be shaken.

Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will rest secure,”

Was meditating on Psalm 16 in the morning….was struck by this declaration that David made in verse 8. One thing that he did was aiming His gaze (probably his thoughts and affections, etc…) at God continually. And as a result, his heart is glad, his tongue rejoices and his body rests secure! Quite amazing, isn’t it? Some of the things that he says about God in this Psalm: v1 – You are my refuge, v2 – Apart from You i have no good thing, v11 – you fill me with joy in your presence, etc…

Was challenged to think again of what my heart is set upon…and to what degree in this evident in my everyday life……

Taking a Spiritual Examination

Hi Folks,

I’ve always had a desire to be ALWAYS passionate for God! To be like a soldier always on standby, so that when my Lord gives a command I will carry out His instructions, not robotically but with a servant’s heart that firmly believes in His wisdom. However, the trials of life and the weariness that comes with living in a fallen world makes it a challenge for me to be this awesome soldier.

The Devotion below reminds me once again what it feels like to be this soldier. I thought it would be a good reminder for all of you too…. alittle long but the second half of it is truely worth the read.

Taking a Spiritual Examination

“If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” 2 Chronicles 7:14 (NIV)

Devotion:
I don’t have a green thumb, but that doesn’t keep me from trying to grow plants and flowers. This year, my sister gave me a beautiful orchid for my birthday. On the card, she joked, “Happy Birthday. Enjoy the orchid and try not to kill it.”
Not wanting to disappoint my sister, I took extra care of the plant. I measured the water I gave it, marked the calendar so I’d remember when to water it again, and I even prayed over it. Caring for the plant made me consider what my life would be like if I gave this much attention to my relationship with God.
Often we neglect to care for our spiritual life. Too often we become apathetic and lazy in our faith. The result is lost passion and commitment, while self and sin thrive. Too often, we get nothing out of church. God seems far away, and freedom from bondage seems even further. I believe that these characteristics describe a Christian who is in need of a spiritual examination.
I realize that some of us are in a mess so big that we can’t see a way out. Others have tried and tried to live a holy life but continue to fall short. There are also those whose faith has become stagnate, and everyday long for something more. I know. I’ve been there. Whether we realize it or not, we have neglected some area of our spiritual life. Our passion and power have dried up. But with God, there is always hope. He can revive us!
Our key verse tells us how. “If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land” (2 Chronicles 7:14, NIV ). According to this verse, the way out of our struggle is towards God through personal revival.
What exactly is revival? As one pastor put it, revival is: “coming to life again. It’s when we go from indifference to making a difference. It’s when we move from being comfortably numb to being passionately committed. It’s when we move from an appetite for the world and self to an appetite for God.”
Friend, I want to share with you a list of characteristics of a thriving believer that I keep tucked away in my bible so that I can periodically take a spiritual assessment of myself:
We need revival when….
… when we do not love God as we once did.
… when earthly interests and occupations are more important to us than eternal ones.
…when we would rather watch TV and read secular books and magazines than read the Bible.
… when our Christianity is joyless and passionless.
… when we know truth in our heads that we are not practicing in our lives.
… when we make little effort to witness to the lost.
…when we have time for sports, recreation, and entertainment, but not for Bible study or prayer.
. . . when we do not tremble at the power of God.
On the other hand, the characteristics that take place when revival comes are…
… a deepened spiritual hunger
… intense fervent prayer that is enjoyable not dreadful
… repentance
… reckless abandonment and surrender to God
… a fresh fullness of the Holy Spirit
… spontaneous evangelism and soul winning
… restored relationships
… a spirit of thanksgiving and joy
… increased hunger for God’s Word
… a desire to put God/church before entertainment
Just like any living thing, without proper care our spirits wilt. If you and I are smart, we will not neglect our faith. Daily, we will fall on our knees, confess our sin and seek God. Then, He showers down upon us fresh Holy Spirit power. Power that changes lives, restores relationships, brings healing, breaks strongholds, and enables us to live as God intends…passionate and purposeful.
Dear Lord, I confess indulging myself in pleasure and comfort. I confess a loss of passion and love for You. I have neglected my relationship with You and have lost the wonder of who You are. Oh, Lord, I cry out for forgiveness. I ask that You hear me, restore me, and heal me. I rejoice that You are the God of more than second chances. Awaken me, Lord, that I might live in righteousness again, in Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Message from Down Under!!!

Hieee!! Sorry! Been pretty busy running here and there. I’ve never exercised at all in Singapore. But for the past week, I’ve attended about 11 hours of exercise classes. Although they are for pregnant women, boy are they pretty tough. They have aerobic, strength training, etc. Wondered whether Mei wai, Kian and Jo went to such exercise classes when they were expecting. =)

Are u guys having fun at alpha?? Are there any more new guests??

PS: hey, i’m still working on my chapters. What’s worse, I’m given 4 other assignments to do. After next week, I’ll have additional 2 more ;( So…please pray for discipline, strength. I think I’m addicted to my bed!!!!)

Joke: Pastor’s Visit

A new pastor came to town and was canvassing the neighborhood. All went well until he came to one house. It was obvious that someone was home, but no one came to the door even after he had knocked several times. Finally, he took out his card, wrote on the back “Revelation 3:20″ and stuck it in the door. The next day after service, as he was counting the offering he found his card in the collection plate. Below his message was a notation “Genesis 3:10.” Upon opening his Bible to the passage, his face turned red, and he let out a roar of laughter. Revelation 3:20 reads: “Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If any man hear my voice, and opens the door, I will come in to him, and will dine with him, and he with me.” Genesis 3:10 reads: “And he said, I heard thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked.”

Lights, Camera, Action!

Hi Everyone

Gerald and I just finished our wedding photography yesterday. Praise the Lord because everything went very well! My eyes were big and bright! : ) The weather was perfect! Really thank God for the weather because for the last few days, it had been raining. Our outdoor locations were Botanic garden and the beach at Sentosa.

Gerald enjoyed himself more than I expected. He was quite into it , and even suggested many different poses during the shoot. I was the vainpot as usual ensuring that my lipstick was not smudged and that my every smile was perfect……hehe. We can’t wait to show you guys the pictures when they are ready!!!!!!

Pursuing Jesus Above All by Micca Campbell

Psalms 63:1, “O God, you are my God, earnestly I seek you; my soul thirst for you, my body longs for you, in a dry and weary land where there is no water.” (NIV)

Devotion:

There is a tale of an elderly woman in the church who served the Lord for years. Instead of seeking the help of others, she did most of the work herself. She was head of women’s ministry, taught Sunday school, sung in the choir, was on the prayer team, and counseled the pastor on a regular basis. She was tired, worn out, and longed for heaven. Yet, because there was still so much work for her to do, she feared that she would never die. Eventually she did die. I guess God wanted His job back.

Nevertheless, from the perspective of most, today’s successful leaders, whether in the Christian world or secular, are much like this woman.

Somewhere between her calling and service to God she took over, rushed ahead, and set her own agenda. It happens to the best of us. In our service to God we can easily slip into pursuing ministry instead of pursuing Jesus, and miss the purpose of our existence. The same is true in every facet of our lives. The pursuit of happiness, opportunity, or even being a good parent, can get in the way of simply pursuing Jesus.

What are you pursuing? What is it that you really want? Is it a successful career that you covet? Is it to be a musician, a doctor, or to author a book? Maybe it’s a spouse you’re dreaming of, or the desire to be a mom that you’re longing for. Whatever your dream is, it’s a God-given dream. In addition to giving you the dream, God has also given you what it takes to make your dream come true. We don’t arrive at our dreams by our own efforts, nor can we make them come true all by ourselves. We get there by pursuing God.

I have found in my own life and ministry that when God reigns in my heart, blessings and opportunities pour down faster than I can make them happen myself. The best way to get where you’re going is to surrender your dreams to God.

We are always in a hurry. God never is. While He has given us the vision of what we are to become, it may not be a reality in us yet. We have to let God work in our lives until we are ready. The dream is not what needs shaping. It’s us. God often prepares us for our dreams through adversity in our lives.

Don’t be discouraged if your dream seems unreachable. No matter what your circumstances are, God is at work shaping and preparing you for it. You and I may achieve some sort of success by our own pursuit, but it will never satisfy us like pursuing Jesus and waiting on Him to bring our dreams to pass.

When God alone is our true treasure, reward, and prize; when He is all we long for, seek after, love and adore, then He gives us the desires of our hearts. Only then are we ready to fulfill our purpose. No other person or thing can satisfy us like Jesus or prepare us for our God-given dreams. What are you pursuing?

Dear Lord, You know the dream I have tucked away in my heart. You know how I’ve longed for it to become a reality. I trust You today. I give You permission to work in my life preparing me for that dream. While You work, I will simply pursue You and be satisfied until my dream is a reality. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

Application Steps:

Today give God permission to shape you for His purposes. Determine to pursue Him instead of your dream. Then, as God reigns in your life, watch how He pours down blessings and opportunities that can only come from Him.

Reflections:

Are you ready to fulfill your purpose in life or does God still have some work to do?

Are you consumed with pursuing opportunity or Jesus?

Who will accomplish your dream faster – you or God?

Have you uncovered these Promises from God yet?

Just wanna share with you this BEAUTIFUL Psalm. I read this a couple of months back and as I read it, I sense the Holy Spirit stiring my heart, telling me that these are indeed my inheritance, not only mine but it applies to all of His children.

I love God’s word because it contains lots and lots of His promises to us and they are really really awesome ones! Imagine if all the children of God truly knew them, then we never would have any reason to shed tears of anxiety and despair anymore. I pray that as you read these verses from Psalm 112, God would speak to your heart that these are what you truly have in Him and you would be motivated to tap into them.

Psalm 112

Verse 1
Blessed is the man who fears the Lord, who delights greatly in His commandments.

Serena: When we love God’s word, we are BLESSED! Isn’t that awesome!!!!!!

Verse 2
His descendents will be MIGHTY on earth. The generation of the upright will be blessed.

Serena: I define ‘mighty’ here in the spiritual sense. This means that Gerald and my children will be people who will know their God and their spiritual position in Christ! This applies to my children’s children too!!!!

Verse 3
Wealth and riches will be in his house.

Serena: It’s great to know that God will PROVIDE for us always in the material sense.

Verse 4
Unto the upright there arises LIGHT in the darkness.

Serena: In our times of trials, storms and tribulations, God promises His people that He will always always be their Light in the darkness, guiding them daily.

Verse 5&6
He will guide his affairs with discretion, surely he will never be shaken.

Serena: In whatever we do, be it at our work place, in business, in our relationship, God will always guide us and we will always be rooted firmly like a strong and steady Oak tree.

Verse 7&8
He will not be afraid of evil tidings, His heart is steadfast trusting in the Lord. His heart is established. He will not be afraid.

Serena:Tidings means ‘news’. For example, when we hear that someone is out to harm us i.e office politics or any bad news, we need not be shaken bec we are strongly anchored in the Lord.

So you see we are truly blessed!

Mixing Faith With Commerce by Os Hillman

“Your servant has nothing there at all,” she said, “except a little oil.” – 2 Kings 4:2b

Her husband had died. There was no way to fulfill her debts. Her creditors decided to take her two sons as slaves for payment of the obligations that still remained. She pleaded for assistance with the only man of God she knew.

“Is there anything in your house?” Elisha asked.

“Nothing at all,” she said, “except a little oil.”

Elisha then instructed her to go and collect all the empty jars that her neighbors might possess. “Ask for as many as you can,” he instructed.

When the jars were collected, he instructed her to pour what little oil she had into the jars. The oil was more than enough to fill the jars. In fact, there was more oil than jars to fill. “Go, sell the oil and pay your debts. You and your sons can live on what is left” (2 Kings 4:7b).

God often mixes faith with the tangible. The widow believed she had no resources to meet her need. God said she had more than enough resources. She did not see the one jar of oil as a resource. It did not become a resource until it was mixed with faith. Her need was met when her faith was mixed with the practical step of going into the workplace to sell what she had in order to receive her needed income. In fact, there was so much income she was able to pay her debts and live on the money derived from the sale.

Quite often we forget that God works through commerce to provide for our needs. It is wrong to place total trust in commerce without faith in God. God often requires simple obedience to an act that seems ridiculous to the logical mind. It is this faith mixed with the practical that God honors.
Do you have a problem that is perplexing to you? Do you see no way of meeting your need? God may have already given you the skills and talents to meet your need. However, He may be waiting for you to mix them with faith. Ask God to show you the steps necessary to solve your problem. Be willing to take the next step.

September is suppose to be a very special month and it is around the corner.

September is suppose to be Sabrina’s birthday.

Last month, my colleague had a miscarriage. She shared with me about her operation, her pain and her loss.

That night, I sobbed. Thinking of Sabrina. My little darling.

As I continued my days in sorrow, God prepared something for me … in Festival of Praise.

When I stepped into the Stadium, I immediately felt God’s presence. So strong and intense.

My tears rolled down my cheeks when I sang the praises.

Then a song hit me. Hard.

Be Still
Hide me know, Under Your wings.
Cover me, within Your mighty hand.
When the ocean rise and thunders roar,
I will soar with You above the storm,
Father You are King over the flood,
And I will be still and know You are God.
Find rest my soul, in Christ alone.
Know His power, in quietness and trust.

My miscarriage experience is like a storm and flood. My physical and emotion were all up side down. My vision of Sabrina holding my hands, walking and smiling at one another is still in my mind. Vividly.

Yet, God told me that I can soar with Him above my storm, my miscarriage. He is the King over my flood, my miscarriage. In Christ alone, I can rest my sorrow soul. I will know His power, in quietness and trust.

Be still and know You are God.

I felt very comforted after the Holy Spirit ministered this to me. I danced and felt great when Don Moen led us to sing “God is good !”

September IS a very special month and it is around the corner.

September will be another celebration for Sabrina from God. In heaven.

I will have to continue my faith in Him. Be submissive and trust that He is my God, who is good all the time.

It is really quite amazing. I was stunned.

Hi guys,
This song really touched me at FOP. There may be times where we’ve prayed the same prayer about a certain situations or someone so many times that we begin to wonder if God really hears our prayers, or if He is sick of hearing the same words uttered from our mouths ever so often. let’s remember this song.. When we are weak, he becomes stronger!

When you’ve prayed every prayer that you know how to pray.
Just remember the Lord will hear and the answer is on it’s way.
Our God is able. He is mighty. He is faithful.

And He never sleeps, He never slumbers.
He never tires of hearing our prayer.
When we are weak, He becomes stronger.
So rest in His love and cast all of your cares on Him.

Do you feel that the Lord has forgotten your need.
Just remember that God is always working in ways you cannot see.
Our God is able. He is mighty. He is faithful.

Establish the work of our hands!

I was reading Psalms 90 this morning. Some verses touched my heart:

verse 1 & 2 – “Lord, you have been our dwelling place throughout all generations. Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God” This verse reminded me that God has been my dwelling place. In my past … my present … and will be my God, my dwelling place, in my future.

verse 12 – “Teach us to number our days aright, that we may gain a heart of wisdom” I can be removed from the earth in any moment (v. 3- 6), I pray that God will give me a heart of wisdom to live my days fruitfully. In our different roles and circumstances.

verse 14 – “Satisfy us in the morning with your unfailing love, that we may sing for joy and be glad all our days” How beautiful is this verse that God will and can satisfy us with His unfailing love. Everyday is a new day with God’s unfailing love.

verse 17 – “may the favor of the Lord our God rest upon us; establish the work of our hands for us — yes, establish the work of our hands” This verse reminded me the importance of God establishing the work of our hands. No matter what kind of work. Be it an 8 hours job work, 24/7 parents’ work or God’s Ministry.

SAFRA has 4 villas (bungalows) at Bintan Lagoon Golf
and Beach Resort. Bintan Island is located 45 minutes
by ferry ride from Singapore Tanah Merah Ferry
Terminal, and the resort is only 20 minutes away by
coach from the Bintan Ferry Terminal.

Each single story villa has a built-in area of 140 sq
m, and has a living room, a dining room and 3
bedrooms. A 4-seater buggy is provided for each villa
for easy access around the resort.

Each villa is furnished with:
• 1 double bedroom and 2 single bedrooms plus 4
additional mattresses
• Fully equipped kitchen with appliances (fridge,
microwave oven, stove, rice cooker and toaster),
kitchen utensils, cutlery and crockery.

There is a BBQ pit attached at the back of the villa

sports lovers can look forward to a wide range of sea
sports activities, such as windsurfing, catamaran and

How can I keep from singing

Hi x2ians, thank you so much for your prayer and support for this whole P1 registration exercise. Although I know that this may seem like a small matter….but I am thankful for the journey that we have gone through this past week. Thankful because through this, I see God showing us His little miracles along the way – eg His love through all of you…your prayers, sms, call, encouragement. Also the miracle of having Daniel’s name/number picked first- from all the 39 slips of paper!

Through this, I have also learnt that irregardless of the result, God wants me to love and praise wholeheartedly Him so that ultimately, everyone can see how great He really is! The chorus of this song just sums what is in my heart right now…..

I was overjoy when I read Mei Wai’s sms regarding Daniel’s balloting =) As usual and as emotional, I wanted to cry …. FIRST to be called in the balloting …. To me, it reflected God’s love on Daniel, His precious child whom He loves and cares.

Well, will let Mei Wai shares more on her experience on this.

Just wanted to tell you guys about the interview. Yesterday was a really stressful day for me. I got to know about my sister’s situation in the mornning when I was working. I was worried and told Lawrence that maybe we should go back to see her. At 4:30 pm, Mindchamps called me and asked me to do another teaching segment ! I was caught in surprise ! I said “you told me I need not prepare anything one !” She said “sorry la, the Head of the trainers from Junior programs wants to see your presentation again. Oh and can you be here at 6:15 pm”

With all my anxiety and fast heartbeat, I tried to calm myself down and focus …. and pray.

I did my teaching segment again …. but I felt really peaceful.

I was the first to be called out to answer the CEO’s questions in a group setting …. but I felt really peaceful.

I remembered what my friend told me in the sms: “have fun during the interview and treat it as a learning expereince.”

I remembered the prayers Serena (and others) prayed for me during the last CG. Peace dawned on me …

Some how, the outcome of this interview is not as important to me as before. I guess I “see” God during the process. I learnt something new about myself and the CG during the process.

As for my sister, the opeartion went on (successfully) without me being there …. but I felt really peaceful.

In life, in some experiences, process may be more important than the end result.

Just want to say thank you for all your prayers for the “big day” tomorrow – I am touched by the various sms and phone calls that I received today…..really made my day As I was driving back from work just now – I was touched by this song – How can I keep from singing. As I sang my heart out in the car (with no one around to hear the singing!) God freed my heart to praise and trust Him….just want to share the song with you…..

thank you tania! we can link our own blogs to this as well, so that we can read up about each other’s lives. i’ll be the first to share some thoughts:
re-read our mission statement again and was reminded that we stand for “acts”. i’m glad we’re embarking on the alpha course, will be good training. after that, we can also think about adopting various projects (of course, one at a time!) based on what God impresses upon us. for eg, as a group, we can adopt a home, a family in need etc. For me, after reading newspaper articles on various destitute families, i’m always thinking, what can i do to help? buy milk? rice? something practical like that may help, and by embarking on it as a group, it will give us a united sense of purpose.
